The Three Duty Ratings (ISO 8528)

ISO 8528 defines three generator duty ratings. The rating determines how much power the generator can deliver, for how long, and under what conditions. Getting this wrong means either overpaying for capacity you do not need, or burning out a generator that cannot handle your load.

Standby Rating (Emergency Standby Power)

Standby generators provide backup power during utility outages. They run only when the grid fails and are expected to operate infrequently.

Key characteristics: Maximum output available for the duration of an outage (typically up to 200 hours per year). Average load should not exceed 70% of nameplate rating. No overload capability. Best for: homes, offices, hospitals, data centers where grid power is reliable but backup is required.

Example: A 500 kW standby generator can deliver 500 kW during a power outage, but the average load over the outage should be under 350 kW (70%). If your average load is 400 kW, you need a larger generator or a prime-rated unit.

Prime Rating (Prime Rated Power)

Prime generators are designed for variable load applications with no limit on annual operating hours. They can run continuously if needed, but the average load must stay below 70% of the prime rating.

Key characteristics: 10% overload available for 1 hour every 12 hours. Unlimited annual hours. Average load ≤70%. Best for: construction sites, mining camps, telecom towers, offshore platforms, areas with unreliable grid (Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan).

Example: A 500 kW prime generator can deliver 500 kW continuously with variable load, and 550 kW (10% overload) for 1 hour every 12 hours. If you need 500 kW at 100% load factor 24/7, you need a continuous-rated generator.

Continuous Rating (Continuous Operating Power)

Continuous generators deliver a constant, non-varying load 24/7/365 with no time limit. They are sized to run at 100% nameplate capacity continuously.

Key characteristics: No overload capability. Constant load only. Best for: prime power in off-grid locations (remote mining, islands, military bases), cogeneration/CHP systems, utility paralleling.

Example: A 500 kW continuous generator delivers exactly 500 kW at 100% load factor, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If the load varies, a prime-rated generator is more appropriate.

How to Choose the Right Rating

Use this decision flowchart:

1. Is the generator for emergency backup only (grid is usually reliable)? → Choose Standby

2. Is the grid unreliable or non-existent, and load varies throughout the day? → Choose Prime

3. Is the load constant 24/7 (e.g., base-load power, continuous industrial process)? → Choose Continuous

4. Are you unsure? Choose Prime — it covers the widest range of applications and allows 10% overload.

Important: A generator nameplated "500 kW Standby" is typically the same physical machine as "400 kW Prime" or "360 kW Continuous." The rating changes the rated output, not the hardware. Always confirm which rating your quote uses.

Derating Factors

Generator output decreases at high altitude and temperature. Apply derating to ensure adequate performance:

Altitude: Derate ~3.5% per 300m above 1000m (for naturally aspirated) or ~2.5% per 300m (turbocharged).

Temperature: Derate ~2% per 5°C above 40°C ambient.

Humidity: Derate ~1-2% in high-humidity tropical environments.

Example: A 500 kW generator at 2000m altitude and 45°C ambient: 500 × (1 - 0.025×3.3) × (1 - 0.02×1) ≈ 455 kW. Plan accordingly.

Can I use a standby generator as my primary power source?
